Chapter 17

Roric

Roric watched his mate as she prepared caffe for the group. Normally, he preferred to get moving first thing in the morning, eating as he traveled. But she enjoyed leisurely mornings, and he had a hard time denying her something so simple. The last day had been quiet, and she’d avoided him. But after she had disappeared with Halana the night before, she’d slept by his side peacefully, even if she refused to speak to him.

He shuddered, remembering the memories of the previous night. The coven leader had tortured her under the guise of teaching, while telling her how she’d grown up with the same techniques and insisting they’d strengthen her. That had been bad enough, but seeing the way she’d dragged herself to a corner to heal and put on a smile when her family visited to protect them tore at his heart. If he ever met that witch, he’d rip out her throat with his teeth for what she’d done to his mate.

So even if he didn’t like losing time, especially this far into the swamp, he’d let her make the damn caffe if it made her happy. He must’ve growled, because she glanced at him, alarmed, but didn’t approach with a bowl. Roric had made his dislike of the brew known, but he’d choke it down if she’d smile at him like she did Ithric at his enthusiastic grin. He stood, heading to bathe. He left off his shirt, as he had since the attack. It was getting hotter the further they entered the swamp and the only relief they could find was infrequent breezes and splashing water onto bare skin. He’d also seen Mardella’s eyes lingering on his muscles when she thought he didn’t notice and he wasn’t above using his body to entice her into his arms. Maybe with enough time, she’d decide that his wolf didn’t matter.

Roric entered the clearing, water still glistening on his shirtless chest, and the slight hitch in her breath gratified him. He stopped himself from preening though his wolf practically pranced within his mind. He was a patient hunter.

Mardella cleared her throat. “Would you like to continue lessons today?” She asked Ithric, her eyes darting to Roric’s and away before she continued. “I’m not sure how safe it’ll be since my spells keep collapsing, but we can try it and stop if it gets too dangerous.”

Ithric whooped. “Yes! Look, I’ve been practicing.” Ithric started showing her the lessons that he’d been repeating, alternating between fire and ice. Roric had as well, tossing fireballs between his hands while on watch. He now lit the campfire using his magic instead of his tools. That alone was enough to be life changing. He imagined what it would be like for his warriors to create fire. Staying warm and dry was a battle for a force confined to snowy mountains. His thoughts were interrupted by Baelin joining Ithric and trying to light a fireball. She’d have a full class by the end of the trip.
